What Kind of Cap Fits My Style?

Similar to other areas of streetwear and urban culture, caps and skateboarding have been sharing a success story for a while now. The cap was originally designed as functional headwear for baseball players who needed protection from the sun to focus on their game. They eventually started using the front of the cap as an opportunity to display their team and mascot logos. It wasn’t long before fans started to wear the logo caps to show support for their favorite team.
Primarily in the 80s, skate companies began sporting their logos in the same way. Nowadays, pretty much every skateboarding brand has a collection of brand logo hats, many of which you can find in our online collection. Show support for your favorite skateboarding brand or team with a cap!

A Wide Variety of Caps: Fits, Materials, and More!

So, what kinds of caps are there anyways? There are many different options available. A typical cap is made from six panels which are connected at the top with a button. The front of the cap usually features a flat or rounded “brim” that works to keep the sun or rain off your face, as well as looking super cool!
One way of differentiating caps is by the way in which their size can be adjusted. Caps with a plastic strap closure at the back can be individually adjusted by clicking together the little adjustment nubs that make a “snap” when you connect them, giving the “snapback” its name. Check out our Snapbacks. There’s more than just the snapback though. Some caps come with a buckle closure and fabric or leather strap for adjustments, commonly referred to as the “strapback”. We’ll get more into those in a moment. These styles are often found on 5-panel caps and the Dad Hat cap styles.
You don’t always have to adjust your cap with a snap/strap back you know. A popular alternative is the Flex Fit Cap! These caps have an elastic band inside that gives them a comfortable, snug fit without having to adjust it. They are available in various sizes from S to XL. We recommend measuring your head and using the sizing table on our website to find the perfect fit for you. A similar alternative is the Full Cap. This cap style is typically classified as not having an elastic band inside, and instead it is a specific size that’s made to fit perfectly on your head. They are also referred to as a “Fitted Cap” and the most popular manufacturer of these caps is known as 59fifty von New Era.. These caps come in various sizes, so again, we recommend checking out our sizing table to find our which one is right for you.

Loved by Semi-Truck Drivers and Skateboarders Everywhere – The Mesh Cap!

The Mesh Cap or “trucker cap” is an absolute classic! These caps have a traditional 6-panel design, but most of the time, the four panels in the back are made from a breathable mesh material. The two front panels are usually made out of fabric or even a soft foam material. While these hats are common among American truck drivers, they quickly made their way into skateboarding because the breathable mesh panels keep your head nice and cool during hot skate sessions. They most often have a snapback closure in the back. No true skater would be caught dead without a classic logo trucker hat from the likes of Thrasher, Independent, or Santa Cruz!

A dorky dad style or the hottest new look in skateboarding? The Dad Hat Cap!

The Dad Hat Caps are a classic hat style that has made a true comeback in both the fashion and skate world as of late. These caps originated from the classic baseball cap 6 panel design. They are classified by a traditional curved brim and the panels are usually made from a soft material that sits comfortably on your head. These caps were popular in the 80s & 90s but saw their downfall to the generation of flat bill caps. Now, they are back and bigger than ever with their comfortable fit and super cool “retro” style. They’ve recently been in the spotlight in both high fashion and skateboarding. They commonly feature stylish embroidery or a label patch on the front and possibly the back. They almost always have a strapback-style closure that can be perfectly adjusted to a comfortable size. Thanks to their relaxed and stylish look, dad caps are Unisex and look good with practically any outfit.

From the Military to the Streets – The 5 Panel Cap!

Another good looking cap style is the 5 Panel Cap, also referred to as the “Camp Cap” or even “Army Cap”. The latter term might actually be the most accurate, considering that this cap style originated as part of the early US Army uniform style! Many people have also known it as a traditional style of outdoorsman or hunting/fishing enthusiasts. However, the clean lines, comfortable fit and overall cool style of these caps has brought them into the skate world as well. They usually feature a flat brim style and the panel construction is quite different from a standard 6 panel. They traditionally have two large panels on each side, one panel in the front parallel to the brim, and two rectangular panels running across the top. The side panels usually have several eyelets to increase air flow. The front panel is an excellent place for a stylish logo patch or embroidery and this cap style often has a comfortable strapback closure in the rear.

There are also increasingly popular styles from Okapi, Official, Djinns, and Brixton available. Check them all out in our online shop!

How do I clean my cap? Should I really put it in the washing machine?!

If you want your cap to stay clean, there are some special tips and tricks you should know. First of all, you should NOT put it in the washing machine. Doing so will cause the cap to lose its shape and most likely the shape of the brim will be permanently altered. Of course, a safe alternative is to carefully wash the hat by hand and let it air dry. However, a cool and quick alternative can actually be found in your kitchen. Place your cap over an appropriately sized bowl so that the hat stays in shape, and then simply put it in the dish washer at a low water temperature! Just make sure you don’t put it in there with a bunch of dirty dishes with food on them! Yuck! If the dishwashing alternative is a little too risky for your liking, you can always stick to carefully hand washing your cap.
